Chris -
I assume that you're asking about fingerprint pattern types.
In the "Henry Fingerprint Classification System" the patterns types are as follow...
Arch, Tented Arch ,Radial Loop, Ulnar Loop, Whorl, CentralPocket Loop, Double Loop Patterns, Accidental/Composites.
These are the basics and there are well-defined criteria for classifying each fingerprint.
Hope this gives you enough to get started. TS

Please see the Frequently Asked Question topic "Are fingerprints inherited... are they more similar between family members than between strangers?."

I am doing a science fair project, and asking the question, "Are there any similarities in the fingerprints of a family?" I am using a daughter, mother, and grandmother out of 5 families to do this experiment. But here is the problem...I need some help to make this project interesting, but very original. And I want to get a superior rating. What can I do?

if you have any ideas email me at

Science Project Suggestion

Third graders and university seniors often ask the same questions. The difference is not the questions asked, but in how they go about answering them.

Here's a suggestion... Call your local police and sheriff's departments. Ask to talk with a detective:
1. Ask him/her what kinds of evidence they cannot get fingerprints from when investigating a crime.
2. Write down the list of surface types you hear from him/her.
3. Experiment with using superglue fumes (under adult supervision) to develop fingerprints on the surfaces on your list.
4. Report the experiment results in your project and share them with your local police chief/sheriff.
Best wishes,
