Recently, my truck was stolen and the theives left some marijuana in the truck. The police believe for some reason that the drugs are mine and that I was driving. This is what I believe because my truck is being held for evidence. The police said they would fingerprint the bags or whatever was left to track the criminals. Do you believe that they will be able to do so? What are the chances of them obtaining verifiable fingerprints on bags, glass, or metal?

Jeff,

You definitely need a private investigator. Even better would be a latent print examiner from a near-by department that is outside the jurisdiction of your own law enforcement. Many examiners will do private work if it doesn't interfere with their regular duties. If you e-mail me your location I can look in the professional journals, make a few contacts, and see what I can turn up for you. Also send your contact information so I can pass it on to an examiner. Time is of the essence when dealing with latent prints, especially if they are outdoors.

Recently my home was burglarized, and the perps left lots of partial prints, but almost no full ones. The police won't bother dusting the partials, they say they won't prove a match. From what I have read here, they can. I don't see the harm in taking the prints anyway, just in case they can make a match. The suspects are in custody, so from my opinion, a dozen partial prints should make a pretty solid case. The full prints the police did dust are more than likely my own prints, anyway. Could a PI help? Would it be worth the expense for around $2000 lost to thieves? Also, they opened all my outgoing mail. Does this constitute a federal offense? Should I get an attorney? Any help greatly appreciated.
