The basic structure and location of fingerprint characteristics do not change when a person dies until the skin decomposes. The speed of decomposition depends on how the dead person's body is (or is not) treated with chemicals or placed in an environment to slow down decomposition of the skin and other body structures. In some museums, mummified fingers many thousands of years old still display identifiable areas of friction ridge skin. Of course, a body decomposed to the condition of being a skeleton would no longer have fingerprints.

Pleaase see the fingerprint FAQs or the Fingerprint Sourcebook for more detailed information.
