Recommend you check out "The Science of Fingerprints." It should have everything you need.

Hello everyone, I'm scheduled soon to take a test for a entry level fingerprint technician trainee position with state police. Even though no prior knowledge is necessary 2 parts of the test are about fingerprints comparisons and other about fingerprint centering. While the first one will rely on my attention to 2 images to see if they are identical or not,the second one i need to study to understand what "center" is and how do you detect it. If anyone can elaborate on the paragraph below and help me understand, or send a link with some tests, explanations, etc, would be greatly appreciated.
"each of the test questions in this section, a single fingerprint is displayed and four different areas
of the fingerprint are marked. You are required to identify which one of the four areas represents
the center point of the fingerprint."
