The new research is merely echoing what Graham Ford wrote before. Males tend to be bigger, have bigger hands, and thus larger ridges. The problem still exists that one cannot reliable know whether the prints were deposited by a female with large hands, a young male with smaller hands, etc. | ||

Actually, new research offers strong indications that a fingerprint may be male or female. Scientists have studied the # of ridges in a given area, and determined that females typically have a higher ridge density than males. Females tend to have 13+ ridges per 25sq. mm, and males 13 or fewer ridges. From the research done so far, it seems this is pretty standard across a variety of racial groups. | ||

Well you are absolutely right and i think it is easy to judge but the main point is that expert should open mind and it is a fact. | ||

No. However, there are indications that can lead an examiner to an opinion that a set of fingerprints can be that of a female or male. Are the digits small/large? Is the ridge structure bold & well defined, or are the ridges thin or faint? Is there an excess of creases on the digits. Some of the above can be an indication to the sex of the donor, but none can be considered conclusive in any way and the expert must maintain an open mind. Fingerprints cannot be construed either male or female, until they have been identified to the donor and then it is confirmed. | ||
