Most police agencies do not have the resources to spend time investigating such disorderly conduct matters... they may or may not initiate even a police report. However, depending on the perceptions of the police about the content and tone of the letter, and the resources available to the police, they could have the letter processed for latent prints by forensic scientists (internal police agency scientists or a supporting crime laboratory).

Would the police fingerprint a letter that contains nothing illegal, i.e no threat, ransom..... but is just an unflattering letter that implies wrong doing with no factual evidence....
