There are 3 basic types of powders: Basic (Non-Magnetic), Magnetic, and fluorescent. The basic powder can be used on any type of surface, the color you would use depends upon the background color of the substrate. Magnetic powder can be used on any surface, except metal. The magnetic properties of the powder will adhere to the metal surface, rendering the powder useless. Fluorescent powders can be used on multi-colored surfaces, as when visualized with an ALS, the powder will fluoresce. The basic color of the powder you use should attempt to maximize the contrast between the substrate and the developed latent print. I hope that helps.
