Mr. Ireland, Fingerprint random characteristics are due to differential growth, environmental conditions and other factors... and definitely NOT just genes. If fingerprints were caused only by genes, identical twins (formed from the same genes) would have identical fingerprints. The limited fingerprint similarities (volar pad development, etc.) affected by heredity have yet to be deciphered in the human genome project insofar as I know. Relative to broad categories of fingerprints, your instructor is probably thinking of loops, arches and whorls. But, many other broad categories are also possible, especially in fingerprint record repositories, i.e., fingerprints with scars and fingerprints with no scars, fingerprints with partial amputation versus no amputations, etc. Some persons might also consider the ATRUWCDX Henry classification patterns as broad categories.
