Fingerprint Technicians or ID Technicians generally require as little as two to four weeks of fingerprint training and six months to a year of apprenticeship in a law enforcement agency (depending on the jursidiction), but usually do not require college courses.

You might be thinking of college course work that could lead toward a much better paying forensic scientist position as a Latent Print Examiner.
