not sure about ny family court legislation as i'm from ireland. however palmprints are as reliable as fingerprints as they are developed in exactly the same way and are also friction ridge skin. the amount of detail needed to make a identification is determined by the expert looking at the print. identifications can be made from very small portions. finger/palm prints taken in controlled conditions are called fingerprints palmprints. latents are marks left behind in their natural state. the word latent is derived from the latin 'letere' which means 'to be hidden' which in turn comes from the greek verb 'to escape notice'. in this country the officer taking the prints has been trained in how to accurately record prints,i'm sure the same applies in america. the prints are also quality controlled at fingerprint branch by trained officers to ensure no duplication etc. hope this goes some way to answering your query. | ||

This is a two part question. 1 How reliable and acceptable ( in NY family court ) are palm prints ( partial of one quadrent ) as identification? 2 Is a latent print from a scene compared to a latent print taken by someone with no knowledge of fingerprint technology, pressing a bare hand against a piece of paper considered reliable? Pros/cons? |
