Can someone determin how old or how new latent prints on an envelope is? If someone had touch an enveplope a month ago, would prints from a week ago show up more? | ||

There is no such thing as too many persons handling a letter insofar as developing latent prints. Everyday hundreds of stolen/forged checks are successfully processed to develop suspects' latent prints... even after they have been handled by multiple store employees, bank employees, concerned business owners receiving back the bounced checks, police collecting the checks, etc. It would be unusual for a latent fingerprint to go through a paper towel onto paper, but not impossible if some sort of contaminate or unusually heavy sweating were involved. Such a heavy deposit soaking through a paper towel would often be diffused so much that it is no longer identifiable. However, the fact that someone (victim, etc.) was known to have touched a letter through a paper towel is NOT a valid reason to ignore the potential for developing the suspect's latent prints on the letter. In general, paper envelopes (and probably also paper towels) are sufficient to protect evidentiary documents from the deposition of additional latent prints. | ||
