At onin.com, click on Alex Mankevich's "Online Processing Guide" for the information you seek. Paper is a porous surface. The other items you mentioned are generally non-porous.

I am looking for a basic description of fingerprint processing of evidence (specifically paper, handcuffs, a firearm and a plastic bag) once it reaches the crime lab - what are the proper steps for the crime lab take to obtain prints? Any suggestions as to where I might find that info?
