Eccrine glands cover the friction skin surfaces of finger and palms. Eccrine glands secrete primarily water containing water soluble solids. Thus, latent finger or palm prints deposited only in eccrine gland secretions are usually destroyed (dissolved) when the surface bearing such impressions is submersed in water. It is possible for latent finger or palm prints to survive water submersion or exposure in instances where a non-water soluble contaminant was present on the fingers or palms, or already present on the surface touched by the hands. Examples of such contaminants are sebaceous gland secretions, cooking oil, motor oil, butter, and peanut butter. In some circumstances, fingerprints deposited in water soluble contaminants and allowed to dry before submersion may survive. |
