fingerprints can only be physically altered by deep tissue damage. should the dermis be penetrated then a permanent scar will form. if the damage is superficial, only damaging the epidermis, the skin will regenerate as before. permanent scars tend to pull the ridges in making part of the print look puckered. scars if present in both the mark and the print can also be used in the identification process.

your palms, fingers and soles of your feet are covered in what is called friction ridge skin. this skin aids us in grip, sense of touch and raising up the openings of sweat glands to the surface for the discharge of sweat, this helps to regulate temperature. fingerprints begin to form in the womb.bulges on the epidermal surface, called volar pads form on the fingers etc around the 6th week of foetal life. they continue to grow until approx 13 weeks then start to regress until they look much like they will after birth. volar pad trend is genetically influenced. the physical aspects of the volar pad such as height, location, contour and inclination, each aspect subject to differential growth, create varying stresses along the epidermal surface during friction ridge development, influencing the alignment of the developing ridges and the final pattern. generally a high pad is associated with a whorl, an intermediate pad - loop and finally a low pad - arch.
