Once you lift the print, what are you putting the tape lift on??

If you use a dark powder, carbon or ashes, you need to put the lift on something with a contrasting back ground (white paper).

If you use a light powder, like talcum, you need to put the lift on something with a dark background (black paper). Construction paper isn't a good surface because it's a highly textured surface.

Is this the problem?

hey everyone,

i just started learning how to detect fingerprints and so far i've been workin on dusting for fingerprints...

I always manage to produce a fingerprint, but i'm really not sure about lifting it. I've tried, but when I do, you don't even see a print anymore. I'd like to find out how to lift a fingerprint and what kind of equipment is needed (i'm not really looking for what real fingerprint experts use, but just something cheap)and I would really appreciate it if someone could give me a very detailed tutorial on this procedure, preferably with pictures.

By the way if this affects the situation in any way, I just want to mention that I use talcum powder and I use a squirrel hair brush.
