It is not always easy to determine toe or sole versus finger or palm, but usually there are strong indicators that lead experienced Latent Print Examiners to ask investigators to submit impressions from feet/toes. Put a dry, brown paper bag on the floor adjacent to your shower and step on it with a wet foot. You will notice that most of your toe prints (other than the big toes) deposit a circular shape in the wet marks (here I am talking about the overall outline or shape of the toe marks... not the friction ridge pattern of loop, whorl or arch). Put your wet hand down on the same bag and you will notice that your fingerprints tend to have a much more elongated general outline. Of course, a sole impression (plantar surface impression) observed adjacent to the toes can also be a big clue insofar as finger versus toe.  | ||
