I am interested in finding out if fingerprints can be taken off of a rock...

Can you really pull fingerprints off of jagged rock?

There are two articles dealing with development of latent prints on rock material. One in 1982 (Fingerprint Whorld) cites powder development and one in 1996 (Journal of Forensic Identification) cites cyanoacrylate fuming success after one week. Anything possible!!

Although mostly humorous, a latent print examiner once said "I can get a latent print off anything but running water... and even then I'll give it a shot!"

I would certainly collect and process a smooth river rock for latent prints, especially if collected and processed close to the time of the event (within a few days).

I've seen a lot of posts about what surfaces prints can be lifted off of, but none about rock. My store was recently robbed when someone smashed the window in with a large, smooth, dry river rock. The police said you can't get prints off a rock. Is this true?
