Emilee, Here's a great web site that should have all the information that you could use: http://www.cbdiai.org/Reagents/main.html Webservant note: Alex Mankevich (respectfully known to many of us former coworkers as the "Mad Russian") maintains the Processing Reagent Guide on the Chesapeake Bay Division IAI website. The guide is excellent... there are even two links to it on the starting page for onin.com/fp. |

An old standby would be ninhydrin solution or spray for paper. It reacts with amino acids in fingerprints to make the latents visible. As far as a hard surface, I would look for various powders to make latent fingerprints visible. Newer metods use 'super glue' fumes in a chamber to adhere to prints that can be enhanced with further dusting methods. There are other methods such as using gold particles or other chemicals to adhere to prints, but this should give you a background or further ideas for your story. |

I am writing a short story and it involves some forensics. I have watched enough CSIs to know the answer, but unfortunately I am drawin a blank. How are fingerprints lifted from papers? I wasn't sure if they were put into a chamber to be lifted or if the dust was used. Details on how to recover fingerprints from paper and any other surface would be very helpful. Thank You, Emilee |
