Latent comes from the Latin word Latens, meaning to lie hidden. The dictionary definition here fails to include palm/foot/toe impressions and also excludes contaminated and plastic (three dimensional) impressions. In modern forensic science usage, latent print means any chance or accidental friction ridge (finger/palm/toe/sole) impression visible or developed at a crime scene, or on an item of evidence. This includes visible impressions (in transferred blood, ink, paint, dirt, etc.), plastic impressions (impressed in soft wax, tar, etc.) and invisible impressions which must be rendered visible by physical, chemical or electronic processes.
