Ebay and Toy's R Us sell kits. If you're looking for a forensic supply store, try www.redwop.com. Here's one kit they sell, http://shop.armorforensics.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=RedWop&Product_Code=1-0100

You can also make your own. All you need is clear tape, a soft bristled brush, a card to put your lifts on and powder. Talc works well on dark objects (then you'd want your card to be dark), fire place ashes work well also.

Extra items you may want in your kit are gloves and a mask (so you're not breathing the powder), and a magnifier, but these things don't come in most kits.

For banknotes, the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment (AWRE) conducted research in the 1980's into the frequency of retreival of latents from notes in general circulation. Their findings were a retreival rate of 5%, i.e., on average 5 used banknotes out of each 100 should produce an identifiable latent. Obviously on unused/uncirculated notes the chance of retreival would be much greater, due to no prior contamination.

Louise,

Several techniques could be used on these items, but the majority of examiners would probably process the coins with SuperGlue fumes and black fingerprint powder (or possibly a dye stain instead of powder), and the paper money with ninhydrin or physical developer. If you conduct a search of this site and/or the internet regarding these techniques, you can probably find more information on each one fairly easily. Good luck with your project!
