I suggest getting the FBI book "The Science of Fingerprints." The secondary, sub-secondary (which I assume is what you mean by tertiary), etc. are parts of the FBI extension of the Henry classification formula and are explained in the book. While fewer and fewer agencies actually use Henry anymore due to AFIS, learning it is still a good introduction to friction ridge analysis.
