Fingerprints are classified according to their appearance [patterns with circular formations (whorls), etc.], and also by counting or tracing ridges between special focal points (e.g., triangular shaped ridge formations). Special rules are used to identify the focal points (e.g., deltas and cores), and special rules are also applied to the total fingerprint card information to create a "formula" that enables retrieval of the same card, or of other cards bearing fingerprints of the same person, from within a large database (even when the person uses a false name in an attempt to hide their identity). A very simple classification would be for you to sort ten fingerprint cards into two stacks: one stack for the persons whose fingers have circular-like fingerprint patterns and one stack for those with no such patterns.
