To Mimy and Marie.
The first European writing on fingerprints was by Dr Nehemiah Grew in 1684. His research was limited to pattern types. He did not write about the uniqueness of the prints. Sir William Herschel, in 1858, was the first to use finger and palm prints for identification purposes. Before Herschel, several others provided research that acted as stepping stones to the modern uses. This persons consisted of Marcello Malpighi (1686) who was a professor in Italy. Johannes E Purkinje identified 9 pattern types. herman Welcher (1856) recorded his own prints and then re-examined them in 1897 and noted that they did not change. Dr Henr Faulds began his studies of them in 1880. He discussed the possibilities of identification of criminals by their fingerprints left at the scenes of crimes. Also in the 1880's was Sir Francis Galton began his observations of prints. He wrote a book in 1892 titled "Finger Prints". Galton established individuality and permanence of prints. Galton classified print patterns as "arches, loops and whorls", which are the basic classifications used today. Galton also noted characteristics of fingerprints and named them "dot, island, short ridge, and bifurcation". Sir Edward Richard Henry (1901) came up with the Henry Fingerprint Classification System, which for the most part is used in law enforcement today.

The question of "what are the different types of fingerprints" is a bit vague. There can be inked/rolled fingerprints, which is where police put ink on the fingers and roll them on a card to record them. There are latent prints, which are when oils, salts, and acids are on the fingers. The person touches something, leaving the latent fingerprint behind. This are the most common. There are different fingerprint patters, such as loops (right slant and left slant) arches (plain arches and tented arches), and whorls (plain, double loops whorls, ••••••• pocket, and accidental whorls).
Hope this helps. Good luck with the class projects.

The following request for assistance was emailed to the Webservant on 19 Sep 04:

My name is Persa and I am a high school student, and I have to do a project that will count as 50% of my final grade in school. I have picked to do a project on Forensic Science, and more specifically on Fingerprint analysis.

I would like do build something that would make finding latent prints on human skin(dead body, not alive) more easier and much quicker. I also do not wanna test on any dead bodies, but do you know of something that would give me the same reasults as human skin?

Aslo, if you have any files you would like to email to me because they might be helpful to me for this project, that would be great!

I really would like your help on this project and I will be very greatful if you took your time to reply back to my message. I am in desperate need to make this project very interesting because it does count for such a high percentage of my grade. I have always been interested in forensic science (yes, I do watch all those shows on television) and that is why I thought this topic would be a great idea. Please reply back to my message as soon as possible, I would really appreciate it.
