What is the difference between a loop and a whorl? And what is a delta?

There are two types of loops: ulnar and radial. Ulnar loops slope towards the arm bone under the little finger (the ulna) and radial loops slope towards the arm bone under the thumb (the radius). There are also two types of arches: plain and tented. The ridges in a plain arch start from the side of the finger, flow across, gently rise in the middle, descend, then flow out the opposite side. Tented arches are very similar to plain arches, but there is an upthrust similar to a tent pole under the gentle rise in the middle. Other types of tented arch formations are when two ridges abut at 90 degrees under the gentle rise or when the pattern resembles a looping formation, but there is no ridge count between the delta and core.
There are four basic types of whorls: plain, double loop, centralpocket loop, and accidental. All whorls have at least two deltas (right and left). A plain whorl resembles a bulls-eye target and consists of radiating concentric circles. A double loop whorl has two separate and distinct looping formations. A ••••••• pocket loop whorl resembles a tennis racket and when a straight line is laid across the left and right deltas it does not touch or cross any ridge within the pattern area. An accidental whorl is a combination of at least two different types of patterns or a pattern that does not meet the criteria of any other type of pattern.

Each fingerprint is either a Loop (approx. 65%), Whorl (approx. 30%) or Arch (approx. 5%) of the total population of fingerprints. There will be regional variances of the percentages to some degree. For example, many Asian fingerprints are generally Whorls while more Europeans seem to have more Arches from what I remember. Many people will have all Loops or all Whorls, Arches, but the total will usually conform to these stats.
