Jessica: generally a college degree in science will best prepare you for operating in a forensic science environment. Jerrid: Fingerprints begin to form at about 10 1/2 weeks Estimated Gestational Age when the outer layer of skin begins growing faster than the inner layer. This sets up ridges that make a template from which fingerprints will persist throughout life. By 16 weeks EGA the details become set and a fingerprint pattern and ridge features will never change except for size over the course of the life of an individual. Many factors influence what type of pattern will occur. The two basic factors are the size and symmetry of the volar pad when ridge formation occurs.
