how long a finger print last in a regular paper? I make a police report but the police say that the finger print had over 2 years, means from 1-1-2017 cannot be on the paper

My house was broken into four months ago. The police collected fingerprints but no arrest has taken place so far. How long do the police take to identify fingerprints? |

Can you tell me if the police can tell the difference between an old fingerprint from about two months ago and a fingerprint that was taken three days after it touched the surface. Webservant response: They cannot... please read below. |

From the FAQs of this site: Can a Fingerprint Expert determine if latent prints are "fresh" versus old? Estimates about the age of latent prints are unreliable when the experts guessing have no idea what was on the fingers that touched a surface. Latent prints that develop "quickly, strongly or dark" are not necessarily consistent with having been "recently" deposited. Unless scientific analysis of latent print residue on evidence was completed before processing with powder or chemicals to visualize latent prints (which is an analysis seldom performed because latent prints tend to be invisible until processed), then the nature of the latent print residue deposited by the fingers or palms cannot be known (whether it was fried chicken oil, grease, natural secretions from the fingers, etc.). Circumstantial evidence such as information that an item was cleaned thoroughly with glass cleaner, soap and water, etc., could date latent prints on the item as not being older than the last thorough cleaning. |

Hi. I had an officer tell me that my prints were on the outside of a car near where a vandal performed some damage. This car was my ex-boyfriends who let me borrow it from time to time, so yes my prints would be over it. however we broke up around a month ago. officer told me that this doesn't matter and that he dusted and he could date the print to within a week based on freshness of the print. I've read the FAQ regarding dating but not sure if it applies to my problem. The print was on the outside of a car so I imagine environment can play a drastic role in dating. The officer called me to come in to answer some questions. i was not under arrest and could walk out any time. for an hour he tried to become my friend and then get me to say i did the damage. however the entire time i was freaking out that i borrowed the car a month before!! Can they really date prints or was he blowing smoke at me? What are my options should they arrest me? Help! Webservant Note: If the officer who determined the "age" of your latent prints on the vehicle has some special skills (or ESP) that allows him to determine fresh prints from old prints, please invite him to author a paper for the Journal of Forensic Identification to enlighten the rest of the world... because for the past 100 plus years, science has failed to develop a reliable protocol for determining old versus new latent prints based on their appearance when developed by any method. ...or he could have been attempting the art of subtle persuasion by showing sympathy and working hard to gain your trust, and then bluffing (lying) about your prints being on a surface in incriminating circumstances, to see if you would admit guilt. |

Fingerprints have been developed on porous surfaces (papers, etc.) forty years and later after their deposition. On non-porous surfaces, they can also last a very long time. The nature of the matrix of the latent print will often determine whether it will survive environmental conditions. For example, a greasy print on a piece of glass may survive months under water, or many decades in a basement. |

It is unknown how long a print will remain on an object, because many factors come into play. One of the main factors is the environment in which the print exist, although modern technology is helping with this problem. I have read where prints have been taken off of well preserved artifacts, so you never know. |

Joe and Craig, How long a fingerprint will last on any given surface depends on several factors. First, the "Matrix" of the print, or the contaminant or substance that was deposited from the finger plays a role. Most latent prints are composed of sweat or a sweat-oil mix from the glands of the body. But some prints can be composed of other substances, such as blood, grease, dust, etc... Even with natural residue, the percentages of the types of sweat in any particular latent print is unknown, and therefore the length of time it will remain on a surface cannot be determined. The second factor is the substrate itself, or the surface on which the print is deposited. Some surfaces, like glass or metal, receive and hold prints well, whereas some types of plastics may receive a print well, but the detail will diffuse only after a day or two. The third, and perhaps most detrimental factor dealt with in the collection of evidence, is the environmental factor. This includes temperature and humidity, which interact to produce a variety of effects on a print residing on any surface. Further, most consider the handling of the item to fall under this category, which plays a very large role in how long a print will remain intact on an object. In real life, all three factors act on a latent print, and the combination of all these elements determine the longevity of any particular print. It becomes easy to see how fragile this type of evidence is, and reminds us that latent prints truly are "chance" impressions. -Kasey |
