On 9 February 2000, a group of American Latent Print Examiners meeting at Quantico, Virginia discussed the Scottish Criminal Records Office's erroneous identification of Shirley McKie.

The purpose of the meeting had nothing to do with the SCRO or Shirley McKie. Nonetheless, many of the experts related they had reviewed images of the SCRO incident and independently determined it was erroneous. No person present related they knew of anyone outside the SCRO who believed it to be an identification. Fourteen experts chose to sign a document for publication on this web site.

The signatures represent their personal opinions, and do not purport to be the official position of the 13 federal, state and local American crime laboratories employing them (Pat Wertheim is the only one privately employed). Each is a member of, or chairs, one or more national level fingerprint-related committees, boards or groups. Cummulatively, they have 326 years of experience looking at fingerprints.

The number of signatures is only by coincidence the same number of experts from the Lothians and Borders Police speaking out on this case. Four of the persons signing the document have already posted to the "Problem Idents" comment board about the SCRO error.
