It seems as if there are at least two theories for fingerprint formation that may compete, but also compliment each other. One is based upon volar pad formations and the other is based upon patterning genes (that cause the patterns of feathers in birds and stripes on zebras, for example HOX genes. Thoughts and references? What do fingerprints tell us of potential future gene expression if patterning genes are involved?
