I currently work as a Supervisor in Crime Scene Investigations in Georgia. Latent print examination is part of the job duties of everyone in my unit. Recently, the individual in charge of the requirements for Identification Technician for Georgia has recommended changes to the courses necessary for certification. In the past, Identification certification has also meant that you are qualified to conduct comparisons (within the realm of one's abilities). The classes required that pertain to fingerprints are Classification, Development and Latent Print Identification. We then send our people to more advanced courses, but we do allow them to do comparisons after the three basic classes. The person recommending the changes wants to do away with the Identification course and make it a course comparing ten-print to ten-print. In my opinion, a ten-print comparison course is not sufficient training for someone that is going to be conducting latent print comparisons. I wanted to see what others in the field thought. |
