A couple of years ago, I was a trainee affiliate in the Criminalistics section of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS) and decided to upgrade my membership. I applied to be a member in the Criminalistics section as I am a fingerprint examiner and testify in court to the results of my examinations. After review of my application, I was told by AAFS that I should have applied to the General section and would not be considered for membership in the Criminalistics section. I did not understand the decision as DNA examiners in my lab are members of the Criminalistics section and we basically have the same duties, I just work with latent prints instead of DNA. I decided to call AAFS for an explanation. When I called I was given the run-around and when confronted with the DNA/Latent example I explained above, AAFS said they would look into it. I took the whole episode as another "snub" to the science of fingerprints and as a result I withdrew my application. I was just wondering what other fingerprint examiners think and if any fingerprint professionals in the past couple of years have been accepted as members into the AAFS Criminalistics section? |
