Dear Mr. Khan,

In Portugal the pay scale for a fingerprint expert is equal in AFIS or Crime Scene. It's only necessary to be fingerprint expert.
I'm with 3 years of fingerprint expert earn aproximately 1100 US dolars clean.
But our career is horizontal, we start from Fingerprint expert level 1 and ends in fingerprint expert level 9, all time in the same category, aproximately like a junior technician.
In the other areas of forensics lab, there are the possibility of "jump" to medium technician or even Senior technician.
In fingerprints there are only junior technicians... what doesn't mean that our work is weaker than other lab areas. We are trying to fight against the situation, because our responsabilitie is higher than other technicians lab, because in other areas the juniors and medium experts have a Senior boss which is responsable for the reports... and us are the unique responsables for sign the reports and going to trial and our boss is like us, like a junior technician too.

I am a fingerprint technician with the RCMP in Canada. We are currently facing ugly negotiations on pay issues. Caught in the middle of two employment categories, we are neither public servants nor "regular members" of the RCMP (ie. cops). Consequently, we have neither a union nor the rcmp representatives looking out for our interests and have gone years without pay increases, while other employees continue to get cost of living increases (including a 9% pay raise recently achieved by regular rcmp members, and huge "pay equity" settlements by the public service).

So, my question for you fellow fingerprint professionals is: What is the pay scale for your forensic technicians (AFIS fingerprint tech's)?

We'd like to be able to go to meetings with some information to compare our salaries to others in our field.
I thank you for sharing your information with me.
