Hello Victoria,

It sounds like you're on your way to Cannon AFB. My wife grew up in Portales... you'll have a lot of time to study. There isn't much more going on out there - maybe a trip to the big city (that'd be Lubbock, belive it or not).

Anyhow to try and give some insight on your question. Different agencies have different requirements for becoming an LPE. From what I'm aware, most don't hire graduating students without any comparison experience. LPE's in King County are required to have a minimum of 2 years of comparison experience (usually 10-print setting) to apply.

More and more agencies are starting to require 4 year degrees, or extra years of experience in lieu of the college degree. This isn't universal and there may be some agencies that don't have these sorts of requirements for their trainees, but I don't know of any off the top of my head.

You may want to browse the job postings on this forum to get an idea of what different agencies have asked for in the past. The first step may be to look into becoming an ID Technician (known print comparisons) and work your way towards LPE.

Good luck with your career choice... and keeping yourself busy in Clovis.

I am stationed overseas and am interested in becoming a latent print examiner. I have started taking courses in criminal justice through our base universities however I'm at the end of the line for further courses here and the counselors are unable to tell me the best degree or certificate program to become an LPE. I will return to the United States in January (Clovis, New Mexico)and I am looking for information anyone can give me as to the proper degree program or internship information.
