DNA 'fingerprinting' was a catch phrase to help along the validation of the emerging DNA technology. Fingerprints have long been the benchmark term for the absolute, irrefutable personal identification of an individual and are linked to processes, products, etc., because of their universal acceptance. There are now processes in which bodily substances deposited in latent print residue can be subjected to current DNA technology. However, in its early usage, there were no DNA 'fingerprints'.
