Paul Norkus passed away on 30 Dec 02. The following message was received from Amy Norkus:

About 8:30 this evening (30 Dec 02) my dad passed away very peacefully at the hospital. My mom took him to the hospital today because he was having a very hard time breathing and they put him on oxygen, but they knew it was a matter of time, he just wasn't improving. He was resting and just stopped breathing. His room was full of friends and family and he knew he was very loved. We had a nice Christmas with him and we will always be very thankful for those memories. He had been in a great deal of pain for the past few weeks since starting chemo and radiation, so we are glad his suffering has ended and know that he is in a better place. The funeral will probably be on Friday and we are arranging for the burial to beat Barrancas NAS in Pensacola.

I will not be at work to email the details but I will have someone here send the information for anyone who is interested in attending. We are asking in lieu of flowers to please send a donation in his name to the American Cancer Society, but if you insist on sending flowers, please send a plant that we can grow for years to come as a reminder of how he nurtured us to grow.

My dad and family truly enjoyed all of your calls, cards and emails that you have sent - they were greatly appreciated.

Thank you and God bless!
Amy and the Norkus family

I received notification from Amy Norkus that her father, Paul, is seriously ill in Florida.

Many fingerprint experts know Paul from his many years of attending IAI Conferences, or from interacting with him when he was Chief of the Army Crime Lab LP Offices in America or Japan. Paul Norkus was Chief of the Army Crime Laboratory's Latent Print Division when he retired in the early 1980's to begin a second career as an LP Examiner and Crime Scene Tech with FDLE at Pensacola.

Paul was the first American fingerprint expert to buy a tube of superglue for the purpose of developing latent prints. In September 1979, Paul Norkus bought a tube of Aron Arufa (cyanoacrylate adhesive) at an Eyeworld Department Store in Sagamihara-shi, Japan... and police around the world have been solving crimes using the technique ever since.

I served side-by-side with Paul Norkus in Japan and America during 1977 through 1981 and he was a great boss and friend. If you knew him and appreciated his dry wit and selfless service like I did, now is the time to call Paul and reminisce (he is the only Paul Norkus listed in Florida).

Cheers,
Ed German
