Many laboratories use the terms fragmentary or partial prints to refer to impressions that cannot be determined to be finger versus palm prints due to the limited/partial information present in the impression. Others refer to such impressions as "latent finger or palm prints."

You might think of a "normal" latent fingerprint as being oval-shaped... with partial impressions recording considerably less than an oval shaped area.

The term partial print is generally not used when referring to record (inked or live scan) impressions.
