Primary Role:
Becoming a Forensic Latent Fingerprint Analyst for the Kentucky State Police will allow you to make a positive impact within the Commonwealth and beyond. In many cases, the evidence gathered by the latent print analyst either at a crime scene or in the laboratory can be used to assist in obtaining criminal convictions, bring peace to grieving families, and ultimately enhance public safety.

Key Responsibilities:
All of the following responsibilities will be completed under the direct supervision of a senior latent analyst.
Evaluate latent print evidence for overall quality to establish identity and enter unknown latent fingerprints into the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) for automated search and identification.

Perform fingerprint comparisons (forward and reverse) to establish the identity of latent ridge detail and prepare written reports documenting the examinations performed and the conclusions reached.

Examine and process physical evidence utilizing a variety of processing techniques to develop latent print evidence.
Document via photography evidence and latent print detail using common photographic techniques to preserve and document friction ridge detail and latent print evidence.

Respond to the Medical Examiner’s Office to print known and unknown decedents.
Respond to crime scenes to assist troopers, detectives and other law enforcement officers in the documentation and recovery of latent print evidence.

Acquire knowledge in the science of fingerprint development and comparison for jury comprehension in order to testify in court.
Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other State and City employees and the general public using principles of good customer service.

Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Must have
two years of experience in the forensic science of fingerprint comparison,
lab development of latent fingerprint evidence or
field development of latent fingerprint evidence.

Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: NONE

Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: Experience in the forensic science of fingerprint comparison, lab development of latent fingerprint evidence or field development of latent fingerprint evidence will substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must possess a valid driver's license prior to appointment in this classification. Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s) or other credentials.

Working Condition Work is typically performed in an office setting. Some travel may be required to investigate crime scenes. May be exposed to hazardous chemicals and/or fluids when obtaining and/or analyzing fingerprints.
