As long as the friction ridge detail is intact, useable detail for identification can be obtained regardless of whether the finger/hand/foot, etc., has been amputated or otherwise removed. Friction ridge skin can be very durable and resistant to deterioration by decomposition from post mortem effects. Useable friction ridge detail has been found on mummified remains after many, many years.
